What Are You Fighting For?

W

We’re all living for something.

Some of us are fighting for great causes, such as heeding a higher calling in overcoming cases of poverty in Africa or finding a cure for cancer. There are a lot of us, however, people just like you and me, fighting for smaller things that mean no less to us. We fight to stay awake in the morning (and after lunch hours), a parking space, meet deadlines, get recognition for the things we do. We strive for acceptance and love, we try to be better versions of ourselves to those who love us, and we take on the battlefield with our friends who cannot fend for themselves.

Doesn’t matter who we are or where we come from, there’s a reason why we’re here, trying to make sense of every single day that we wake up to. We don’t literally smell the roses per say, but we know the little things in life that make us feel good somehow.

In the Chinese culture, we’re pretty fond of referring to things that may give us a clue about our future. As each year renews itself, various analysis are drawn up based on the different animal zodiacs and horoscopes – Eastern and Western. Adjustments are made to daily living routines to ensure a smooth year ahead. Then someone comes along to say that we’ve been wrong all the while. Instead of 12, we now have 13 constellations. Whoever who told you you were a psychic Pisces has given you a run for your money.

Accurate predictions or not, have we really veered off that bad on our own? I say we’ve been doing pretty just fine.

Even though the unknown future scares us sometimes, it’s the courage we draw from our loved ones that keep us going.

The big and little things that we fight for, keep us on track. Someone once declared before his death, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” He was an ordinary man who had done his fair share of wrongs in his life, but the moment he found something worth fighting for, he did extraordinary things. He had a pretty ordinary name too, Paul, but his story became one of the most talked about in the world.

What am I fighting for?

I’m fighting to make a difference.  A difference that will let people know that we’re all pretty much similar after all.  Ironic, isn’t it?

Anyway, here’s just food for thought as Chinese New Year approaches.  Now, I have some pineapple tarts to glaze!
